No cold open this week. Too much to do! We open with Elliot hacking into the FBI while pretending to be working on Ray’s ‘migration’ issues. He describes for us his method of hacking step by step.
“I live for this shit.”
“The thrill of owning a system; this is the greatest rush.”
When Ray’s partner, who Ray has baby sitting Elliot starts paying too much attention to what Elliot is doing, Elliot says he needs to speak to the previous computer guy, RT, about some of his encryption. Elliot meets with Ray later on and he hesitantly agrees to get RT to meet with him but he’s definitely suspicious. If Elliot is as good as he hears why does he need help?
Meanwhile, Agent DiPiero and the FBI continue their investigation, crawling all over Steel Mountain and seemingly having identified many of the people at The End Of The World Party including Mobley. Her partner mentions a trip to China and while at the airport, going down the escalator, some guys in Dark Army masks get DiPiero’s attention. A lot of people in masks running around these days.
Angela comes home to find Darlene waiting for her. Darlene wants her to plant a device at E Corp to help with Elliot’s hack into the FBI. She reminds Angela about the disc she downloaded at Allsafe that helped with the hack of E Corp from Season One.
“Once we have access to the system we can make all the bullshit go away, all the evidence on you and Elliot gone.” Darlene tells her.
Angela blows her off and refuses.
Later on, back at ‘mom’s’ (why is she never addressed or shown?) Elliot is completely against involving Angela even though Mr. Robot agrees with Darlene. Elliot insists that Darlene take care of the job herself.
Angela changes her tune though after a meeting with her old boyfriend, Ollie. He starts to reminisce about how they’re in the same bar where he first told her he loved her and then hands her his resume and asks for a job with E Corp. When Ollie brings up the CD that Angela downloaded at Allsafe she gets suspicious. “Allsafe was ground zero for the hack. Do you think the CD had something to do with it?” Ollie inquires.
Angela grabs his phone and sees that he has been recording their conversation. He’s spoken to the FBI and his lawyer told him to record their conversation.
Angela is now worried and goes to see Elliot at ‘mom’s”. Elliot is still against her helping them but Angela convinces him. It’s nice to be reminded that these two really care for each other. She asks him why he pushed her away.
“My dead father is standing behind you right now.” Oh, right. You’re crazy.
She offers her friendship, someone who understands.
“Maybe it will help.” She says soothingly. Elliot smiles. His first real smile all season.
We see Angela on the subway and walking from the station in a similar scene from last episode involving Darlene. She is completely paranoid now just like the rest of them. She ends up meeting Darlene, Mobley and Trenton at F Society’s new HQ, the smart home of E Corp’s legal counsel. She’s in.
Mrs. Tyrell’s storyline continues and offers some interesting moments but feels out of step with the main thread. This guy she’s been paying hush money too is coming unhinged so she has her bodyguard bump him off and make it look like a burglary gone wrong. He injects him with a paralyzing serum then ransacks his apartment. Then shoots him.
“Tell about his death. He didn’t feel anything? Did he look at you” she asks as she plays with her baby.
He asks why she wanted him paralyzed first before killing him.
“Killing a man instantly robs him of explanation. He has no time to process his final moments. Now, even though he was paralyzed, his mind was still able to understand why his life was ending. We let him die with answers otherwise we’re nothing but ruthless murderers”
Is it a kindness or just sadistic? The woman is definitely twisted.
Agent DiPiero and the FBI team meet with the a Chinese delegation lead by Mr. Zhang, the Minister of China’s State Security who turns out to be none other than Whiterose himself. The plot thickens. The FBI needs to investigate the hack of E Corp offices in Beijing. DiPiero then blurts out that they need everything they know about the hacker group The Dark Army. Whiterose’s face goes slack and then turns into a smile. Of course they will share all the info they have on The Dark Army and cooperate in every way with their inspections. And by the way, we’ll be having a party in the FBI’s honor!
DiPiero looks completely awkward at the party and when she goes in search of the restroom she stumbles upon a room filled with clocks. Whiterose finds her and tells her of his obsession with clocks.
“You’ve surrounded yourself by the constant reminder of mortality” DiPiero says.
Whiterose asks her how a girl from New Jersey ended up in the FBI.
“I was disgusted by the selfish brutality of the world and at the same time fascinated by it. The FBI is the perfect place for that kind of contradiction “
Whiterose presses her further about what made her join the FBI and she tells him about jilting a former boyfriend when she was in law school. A lot more to this story I think.
Whiterose then takes DiPiero to his bedroom to show her his closet full of beautiful Chinese gowns. He tells her that they belong to his sister but we know they belong to him. He then goes into an interesting bit asking her if she ever wondered what the world would be like if the 5/9 hack had never happened and theorizing that there are alternate realities at play. He himself is living in two realities, one as Mr. Zhang and the other as Whiterose. What are DiPiero’s two realities? We know Elliot has the two sides of himself he lives with. It seems we all do.
The next morning, DiPiero and the rest of the agents seems hungover and as DiPiero and her partner are at the snack table a group of armed masked men burst in and start shooting. Her partner goes down as do most of the other agents. DiPiero manages to find cover and retrieves a weapon from a fallen agent. She shoots one of the attackers in the leg but before she can finish him he shoots himself. The scene ends without any closure, leaving you to wonder how she gets out of that predicament.
We end with Elliot meeting with RT. RT still has bruises on his face from his last meeting with Ray. Elliot communicates with RT by typing on the computer screen asking why he wasn’t working with ray anymore.
“Just shut up and finish this.” RT types back.
Elliot keeps asking him if Ray hurt him.
“Do you really not Know what happens on this site?” RT types. Mr. Robot steps in and slaps his fingers on the keyboard typing gibberish, warning Elliot to stop.
RT goes to the Admin page and types in Ray’s user name, ‘Dread Pirate Robert’ and types the password then gets up and walks out leaving the decision to enter the site up to Elliot. Of course he hits enter and opens up Midland City, Ray’s website, the website ray warned him not to look at. It is page after page of debauchery, every kind of drug is being sold, guns, hit men to be hired, even women from Thailand can be bought. Elliot is horrified.
Ray is a generous, kind man. Ray is a criminal. His two sides. Elliot’s old instincts to be the fixer, to punish bad people kicks in.
“If he’s guilty I can destroy him in two minutes.” He says.
Mr. Robot urges him to not get involved.
“Ray is not some coffee shop owner.” “Forget what you saw and move on! We have other battles to fight.”
But Elliot cannot forget what he saw.
The episode ends with Elliot lying in bed when two men come in, grab him and drag him outside. (Again, where is mom? She didn’t hear that?) Ray and his partner are waiting for him. The partner tosses a rat’s tail on the ground. That can’t be good.
“I told you not to look.” Ray says.
The two men commence to giving Elliot a thorough beating.
Random Thoughts and Quotes
I see the alternate reality theory being bandied about. How much of this is really happening and how much is happening in Elliot’s head?
“You don’t really dream, do you?” DiPiero’s partner.
“Never interested me. “ DiPiero
Ollie speaking with Angela about Gideon’s murder. It may have been one of those ‘5/9 truthers’.
“Life is but a walking shadow.” Mr. Zhang/Whiterose
Looks like Tyrell is close to making contact. He sends a silver baby rattle to the house and calls Mrs. Tyrell and though he doesn’t speak on the call she hears the same siren on the phone as she hears outside her home.
Things are heating up! And this episode only ran 70 minutes! How long will it take for Elliot to break free of ray and his henchmen?
